Visual Arts

The Mandelstam School offers a comprehensive visual arts program for students from Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. The developmentally appropriate curriculum is devised to help the young artist develop their motor skills, communicate effectively through their artwork, learn about art throughout history, and gain confidence in their abilities that can last a lifetime.

Throughout their art experience, students will gradually move from basic art skills and concepts to more challenging techniques and vocabulary. The students will be introduced to a variety of non-toxic art materials and mediums through which they will learn various techniques.

Above all, students are encouraged to love art and learn to express themselves through color, mark making, creation and exploration. As Pablo Picasso once said, “All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist when he grows up.” Our students develop confidence through their participation in the visual arts.

Students are exposed to a cultural perspective by studying various famous artists, ancient and modern masterpieces, and by way of real experiences at local museums. Through interdisciplinary opportunities, art is combined with science and the grade level classrooms.
